The beekeepers of the Bolgradsky district of Odessa region were faced with the mass death of about 2.5 million bees. Beekeepers are sure that insects were affected by the pesticides used by the local farmer.

All the working bees died. Newborn bees flying out of the hive also go to certain death.

All this takes place during the high season, when each week the hive could bring about 30 kg of honey, says the beekeeper Nikolai Tomev. He said that in each family 25 thousand bees died. For 100 hives this will be 2.5 million insects.

Up to 800 hives were affected in 8 apiary areas. According to the commission, the field with rapeseed was treated with insect poison. It is allowed, but it is impossible to work with it during the flowering of culture.

The accused agrarian himself does not see his guilt in what happened and states that the beekeepers themselves are to blame for the death of the bees. He says the rape hit the cabbage moth. To save crops from the pest, the fields were urgently treated with an insecticide. The farmer says the beekeepers did not take care of their bees, which had to be closed.

Beekeepers of the Bolgradsky district suffered losses from several hundred thousand to 1 million hryvnia. They will demand compensation through the courts. According to environmentalists, the farmer may be criminally liable for harming nature. Now the beekeepers are awaiting the results of the examination, which should reveal what the bees died from.
