In the summer, when the dog or puppy is on the street, it is difficult for them to avoid insect bites. More often bites do not cause serious consequences, but not always. Let us consider the danger of a bee or wasp sting for dogs, their symptoms, what necessary help should be provided, and what are the measures to prevent complications.
What is a bee sting dangerous for a dog?
People are often amused when a cat or dog chases insects. Such a game with bees can end in failure. These insects, when bitten, leave their sting in the body of the animal. A single bite is usually not fraught with negative consequences, but sometimes an allergic reaction occurs, and the situation becomes threatening.
Together with the sting, the bee leaves a special substance on the dog, which is a signal for attacks from other bees guarding the hive. Multiple bites increase the likelihood of allergic reactions and anaphylactic shock. It is especially dangerous if the insect stings in the face. In the presence of allergies, edema can cause serious breathing problems. Limb bites cause far less concern.
Did you know? Bees have a serrated sting that gets stuck at the site of the bite. At the same time, part of the intestine of the insect is pulled out with it, and it will soon die. Wasps have a sting without nicks and leave it after stinging with them.
Bite symptoms
In a dog that was bitten by wasps or bees, one can observe:
- Fright of painful sting;
- the place attacked by insects swells and itches, you can notice a sting on it;
- weakness or salivation;
- if the dog is stung in the paw, it will be limp, and if in the jaw it will not be able to eat.
If an allergic reaction to a bee stings occurs, the symptoms will be as follows:
- breathing becomes difficult;
- symptoms of oxygen starvation appear - a blue tongue and mouth;
- severe edema;
- a rash starting at the sting.
Signs of anaphylactic shock:
- the appearance of foam from the mouth;
- vomiting
- severe weakness, the animal does not stand on its feet;
- loss of consciousness.
Important! In the presence of bees and wasps, a person should move smoothly. If you wave your hands sharply, driving insects away from the pet, you yourself can become a victim of their bite. A person may also be allergic to the poison of these insects.
First aid
Necessary actions of the owner of the dog with a bee sting depend on the reaction of the body to it.
In most cases, you need to do the following:
- Find and inspect the bite site. In this case, you should find a sting stuck in the skin and carefully remove it with tweezers or with a needle, trying not to violate the integrity of the capsule with poison. All instruments must be pre-disinfected with alcohol.
- After the sting is pulled, several drops of blood need to be squeezed to the surface to avoid the possibility of the poison getting into the blood.
- It is good to treat the wound with an antiseptic (alcohol, iodine, brilliant green).
- Apply cold to the sting site.
- Give the animal more drink.
- In the place of the bite, so that it does not itch, rub an antihistamine ointment, for example, 1% Hydrocortisone. Itching can be reduced by lubricating the place with a solution of soda. Alkali neutralizes the acids contained in bee venom.
- For prophylactic purposes, give the animal antihistamines (Cetrin, Suprastin, or Diphenhydramine).
- Observe the condition of the dog and limit its mobility for a while to prevent the spread of poison.

What to do in case of acute allergic reaction?
A dachshund or other dog breed bitten by bees can swell a lot and look funny, but there is nothing funny in this situation. Rather, the animal needs urgent help. If you notice a severe allergic reaction, it is necessary to administer the antihistamine in the correct dosage as soon as possible.
Antiallergic drugs
In case of a severe reaction, ampoules should be chosen so that the medicine begins to act as quickly as possible.
You can choose from the following list:
- "Tavegil";
- "Suprastin";
- Diphenhydramine;
- "Dexamethasone";
- "Furosemide."
Did you know? The queen bee stings only rivals and never touches other animals and people. Drones do not have a sting at all, and working bees will protect their hive and uterus from outside threats at the cost of their lives, because after a bite they die.
Dosage for acute allergies
If it is not possible to clarify the dose volume at the veterinarian, then you can use the following dosages for different drugs.
For "Diphenhydramine", "Suprastin" and "Tavegil", depending on the body weight of the dog, the drug is administered based on the following calculations:
- for individuals weighing up to 10 kg - 0.1 ml / 1 kg of body weight;
- 10–20 kg - 1 ml per animal;
- over 20 kg - 2 ml.
For Dexamethasone:
- for dogs weighing up to 10 kg - 0.1 ml / 1 kg of weight;
- 10-30 kg - 1 ml per individual;
- over 30 kg - 2 ml.
- for animals weighing up to 10 kg - 0.1 ml / 1 kg of weight;
- 10-19 kg - 1 ml per individual;
- 20–29 kg - 2 ml;
- 30–39 kg - 3 ml;
- 40-60 kg - 4 ml.
Important! The dose of the drug depends on the weight of the dog, and it is recommended to coordinate with a veterinarian.
Precautionary measures
To protect pets from bee stings, you should follow these precautions:
- Do not walk near the apiary.
- If you take your pets out of town, bring your dog’s first-aid kit with you. It should contain antihistamines.
- Do not let the dog walk around flower beds, as well as flowering shrubs that attract wasps and bees with their color.
- If a bee or wasp flew into the house, you need to open the window and drive the insect away with a towel. In this case, animals should be isolated in another room.
- When going to nature, it should be borne in mind that the smells of perfumes and sweets attract these insects.
- If a pet is taken to the country, it should be ensured that there are no nests of wasps or bees in the area. Otherwise, take measures to destroy them.
- If stinging has occurred, and it is necessary to carry out a painful sting removal procedure or an injection, you need to behave confidently and firmly so that the dog feels a leader in you. Procedures should be carried out quickly. If necessary, resort to the help of another person who will restrain the dog, or tie it.
In most cases, when a bee dog bites, it is enough to process the sting site, but sometimes you can not do without an injection. In the summer, it is recommended to keep anti-allergic drugs in your home medicine cabinet that can save the animal’s life.
