Varietal testing plots of the Kurgan region from the branch of the State Commission Commission may close due to lack of funding.
The lack of funds threatened to close the only Makushinsky state variety testing section in this region.
The importance of testing varieties is difficult to overestimate. GSU specialists regularly test varieties that are bred by breeders.
They test new varieties in the field, study their germination, economic benefits, and fitness indicators for given climatic conditions.
This year, the fields of state variety testing plots were planted with 40 crops. The main culture of the region is soft spring wheat. Experts tested 36 varieties of this crop, as well as another 13 varieties of durum wheat, 11 varieties of barley, 4 varieties of oats, 91 varieties of sunflower and 28 varieties of fodder corn.
In addition, more than 80 varieties of vegetables and 157 fruit and berry crops were tested. 213 experiments were conducted at the phyto-site. This is stated in the message of the acting head of the branch of the State Commission Sergei Yakimov.
As Sergey Yakimov summed up, according to the results of the tests conducted by the branch, each year a collection of recommendations on the selection of varieties for certain soil and climatic conditions of the Urals is published.
