Storm Gloria ruins the east coast of Spain with very cold winds, heavy rain and snowfalls. On Sunday, agriculture in 3 provinces suffered from it: in Alicante and Valencia, the wind, storm and snow caused damage, and in the Balearic Islands the wind was raging.
However, on Monday, 9 provinces were already included in the list of victims. Rain and wind cause great damage to crop production.
The abundance of water in the fields with leafy vegetables, as well as broccoli, cauliflower and artichoke, among other things, makes harvesting difficult. Many producers cannot enter their fields in the coming days, resulting in a delay in harvesting and shipments.
A sharp cold and a series of cloudy days impedes the growth of plants. This has a direct impact on the available quantity of products, especially since Murcia is the most important growing area in Europe for this type of vegetable in winter. Since temperatures plummeted, broccoli and cauliflower prices have risen the most.
Storm Gloria expresses itself as a series of extreme weather conditions that damage the cultivation of citrus fruits, seasonal vegetables and infrastructure, according to the Valencian Agricultural Association (AVA-ASAJA).
By far, the most affected citrus crop. Near Valencia, whole fields of oranges and tangerines were flooded, especially where rivers overflowed. The situation with vegetables is also not encouraging: many fields are completely flooded, losses reach up to 100%.
The damage from the storm can amount to several tens of millions of euros. The storm had not yet subsided, and many manufacturers were unable to enter the plots to calculate the losses.
According to the first findings of the Valencian Agricultural Association (AVA-ASAJA), serious damage is already being measured in the Valencian community. Up to 80% of citrus fruits in some areas in the regions of La Marina, La Safor, La Costera and La Ribera fell from trees due to gusts of wind at a speed of more than 100 km / h.
