From Wednesday, Coles and Aldi supermarket giant retailers have two and three-liter bottles of milk that will cost 10 cents more.
Supermarkets were forced to follow rival Woolworths, which last month added 10 cents a liter to its home brand. Agriculture Minister David Littleprod recently urged Australian buyers to boycott Aldi and Coles while supermarkets continue to offer low-cost milk.
Supermarkets will now add to the price of 10 cents per liter for each bottle, making the price of their two-liter bottles at $ 2.20 and three-liter bottles at $ 3.30. Company management has announced that price increases are a short-term solution to problems in the dairy industry requiring structural reform by the federal government.
Coles Group CEO Stephen Kane said his company, along with government and industry stakeholders, is committed to helping make the dairy industry more sustainable. But farmers, he said, cannot wait long and therefore the company comes to their aid. Aldi's managing director for procurement, Oliver Bongardt, stated that “This solution is a short-term measure and will allow our processors to immediately transfer additional funds to their dairy farmers outside of normal seasonal adjustments.
