In a farm in Poltava on an area of more than 230 hectares. The scale of crops and the lack of proper documentation attracted the attention of law enforcement agencies of the Poltava region, who arrested the harvest.
According to the farmer, poppy was grown as a filling for pies. The cost of such a "crop", according to preliminary estimates of the police, is 7 billion UAH.
“When poppy is crushed in a dried state and after chemical treatment, acetylated opium can be produced from it, which has a destructive effect on the body and causes addiction,” said Sergei Tsyganenko, deputy head of the Poltava region Drug Abuse Control Department.
According to the police, an enterprise that has grown a dangerous crop does not have the necessary licenses and permits for this type of activity.
The farm admits that there are still some problems with the documents, but they did not plan to grow poppy for opium production. In addition, they note that they have concluded contracts for the sale of poppy seeds.
But law enforcement officers have already received a court decision to arrest the crop. Investigative actions are underway. The police plan to mow and burn the entire poppy. Employees of the company plan to appeal the court decision. They have 5 days for this. Now the Oktyabrsky District Court of Poltava has suspended the decision to destroy poppy crops.
