In Ukraine, pistachios have never been grown on an industrial scale. The walnut grower expects to see the first harvest after 6 years.
According to Andrei Petkov, a tree that has reached 10 years of age already gives about 10 kg. An enthusiast believes that his example will inspire Ukrainian gardeners from the southern regions of the country to cultivate these nuts.
The farmer receives seedlings from Uzbekistan, as the climate of the Odessa region has much in common with the weather conditions of Central Asia, which provides for the successful cultivation of these trees in Ukraine.
Under the laying of the garden, Andrei Petkov leased for a long term 3.5 hectares of land in the village of Broska, Izmail District. Already in June of this year, he planted over 3 thousand seedlings, despite the fact that 300 trees are planted on 1 ha.
According to the farmer, pistachios tolerate drought, soil salinity, as well as temperature extremes. Growing a pistachio is very beneficial. In Europe, its profitability compared to conventional crops such as tomatoes, beets, corn, almonds is much higher.
At the same time, the cost price is quite low due to the natural unpretentiousness of pistachio trees.
