In the Benelux countries, the scandal is intensifying due to meat infected with listeriosis. According to media reports, for the same reason, a pregnant woman gave birth to a dead child.
In the Netherlands, we are talking about 130 different types of meat products, while in Belgium the cases of poisoning were caused by the use of roast beef, packed in sliced slices. The Dutch list includes: chicken, sausage and bacon. Contaminated food had a shelf life of up to mid-October.
The scandal erupted around the products of the Dutch meat processing company Aalsmeer. AFSCA, the Belgian food safety agency, accuses it of not being warned in accordance with EU regulations by its Dutch counterpart, the AFSCA food safety agency.
Belgian special communications services are contacting the Dutch authorities to report on the situation and disclose details. Products from this manufacturer are also sold in Germany. According to media reports, it cannot be ruled out that bacterium poisoning led to the death of another 2 people.
The bacteria Listeria monocytogenes are ubiquitous in the natural environment - in water and soil. A characteristic feature of Listeria monocytogenes is the ability to reproduce at a temperature that is usually found in a refrigerator.
The use of contaminated food causes a disease called listeriosis, which mainly threatens the elderly, pregnant women, newborns and people with weakened immune systems.
The infection is invasive and can cause symptoms such as sepsis, meningitis, encephalitis, endocarditis, arthritis, bone infection, peritonitis or pneumonia.
