Safflower belongs to unpretentious crops and feels good even on those soils where nothing grows. In particular, it can be cultivated on such unproductive lands as saline, saline soils and massifs.
Growing safflower is also possible on chestnut soils in combination with solonetzes from 50 to 60%, onion-chestnut soils with solonetzes up to 30%. Under these conditions, the crop yield reaches 5.9 kg / ha.
Safflower sprouts easily withstand short-term frosts to -4-6 C. But after the formation of a rosette of real leaves, resistance to low temperatures decreases sharply and in the future plants require a lot of heat. The highest demands on the amount of heat the culture puts forward during flowering and seed filling. If during this period the weather is humid and gloomy, then the flowers are poorly pollinated, and the baskets can begin to rot. The least favorable is the safflower sowing during the rainy season with a tendency to lower temperature in the flowering phase.
For information, safflower dyeing flowers are used to produce harmless coloring pigment of red, yellow and saffron colors. They are used in the food industry, in particular in the manufacture of caramel. Flowers are added to herbal teas. Safflower is also used as an oilseed. From its flowers, valuable safflower oil is obtained, which is especially appreciated in cosmetology. Safflower oil is also used in the production of margarine. Culture has also found its application in medicine as a diuretic, choleretic and laxative.
