Bad weather caused damage to garden strawberry plantings in the western regions of Ukraine, said Taras Bashtannik, Director General of Ukrainian Berry.
Fruit trees in the West of the country were well tolerated by the weather, and their yield is not expected to decrease. Export can save the region from overproduction, said Vladimir Pechko, head of Ukrsadvinprom, who hopes to increase export supplies this year.
According to Taras Bashtannik, stone fruits are also in good condition. According to the expert, they survived the weather without loss. Taras Bashtannik expects that this year Ukraine will be able to export part of their harvest to Belarus. If the whole crop remains at home, prices will be low.The western regions of Ukraine lost about a third of the total strawberry crop due to bad weather. In the Ternopil and Lviv regions, farmers did not count 20-30% of the crop. And the areas affected by the hail lost 50% of the total strawberry crop, Bashtannik shared information.
Poland, for the same reason, lost a significant amount of the crop, this is berries. In this country, the air temperature was up to -6-8 ° С for three nights in a row. So far, Polish farmers have not had time to calculate their losses. But those regions affected by frost have completely lost their strawberry harvest. This will lead to an increase in the price of strawberries, it will not be cheaper than last year. Other berry plantations in Poland were not so badly affected by the cold, Taras Bashtannik noted.
